Amit Singhal reveales exact formula of Google's ranking at Retrieval Conference in Glasgow

Amit Singhal, the main architect of Google's search algorithms, revealed the exact formulas of Google's ranking this morning at the European Conference of Information Retrieval in Glasgow, UK. (http://ecir2008.dcs.gla.ac.uk)

The ranking formula, consisting of 263 different features contains apart from the well-known pagerank formula, a number of until now highly secret components, such as the keyword stuffing to cloaking ratio, the normalized adscraping log-likelihood, the expected conditional link farm probability, and a factor for geometrically maximized noun phrase replacement discounting.

Amit's bewildering keynote speech announces a new era of internet search. As common in other fields of computer science, most notably cryptography, all Google's algorithms will be completely open and transparant to their users. Inspired by the public key algorithm developed by Rivest, Shamir, and Adleman at MIT in the 1970's, Google has established sever safeguards that make it virtually impossible for spammers to take advantage of Google's new open policy. Safeguards use incredibly large prime numbers computed on Google's large data centers that are impossible to break for any other company or organisation in the upcoming 20 years. Only the US government will get access to these large prime numbers.

The full ranking formula, which takes over 100 lines of pseudo code, will be published later today on the official Google blog at http://googleblog.blogspot.com.

SIGIR best paper awards announced today

The SIGIR 2007 best paper awards were handed today at the SIGIR banquet. This year's best paper is written by Ryen White, Mikhail Bilenko, and Silviu Cucerzan: Studying the Use of Popular Destinations to Enhance Web Search Interaction. The best student paper is written by D. Sculley and Gabriel Wachman: Relaxed online Support Vector Machines for spam filtering.

White, Bilenko, and Cucerza present a novel Web search interaction feature which, for a given query, provides links to websites frequently visited by other users with similar information needs. These popular destinations complement traditional search results, allowing direct navigation to authoritative resources for the query topic.

In the best student paper, Sculley and Wachman developed a fast online Support Vector Machine variant called Relaxed Online SVMs. The method gives state of the art performance on spam classification, at greatly reduced computational cost.

The SIGIR 2007 welcoming reception takes place at The Foyer of
Amsterdam's City Hall the "Stopera" on Monday 23 July at 18:00 h.
The Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Amsterdam request the
pleasure of your company at a reception on the occasion of the
30th Annual International ACM SIGIR Conference.

The Stopera houses both the city hall ("Stadhuis" in Dutch) of
Amsterdam and the Opera, hence its name "Stopera". The Stopera
is located between Waterlooplein square, the Amstel river and
the Zwanenburgwal canal. The building is located on a bend of
the river Amstel. The opera house building is shaped like a huge,
massive block, with a curved front facing the city. Its glass
facade provides panoramic views of the river from the curved
interior foyers. People in Amsterdam either love the building
or hate it...

With the early registration closed on 15 June, 422 people have registered for SIGIR in Amsterdam.
This number (422 registered participants on June 15th) is more than the early registrations of the record year in 2006 in Seattle. If people keep on registering in the same pace, wel will break last year's record, which is a surprise considering that the non-US SIGIR conferences tend to be a bit smaller than the conferences in the US.

The first Industry Event is proud to announce an excellent preliminary programme of speakers.

Omar Alonso from SAP discusses sensemaking in the enterprise,
where the Orcatec LCC speaker presents on legal discovery and
litigation support.

Hugh Williams from Microsoft and Byron Dom from Yahoo! will discuss
topics in search for end-users.

Vertical search is treated by Thomas Mandl, who assesses 54
website search applications, while Craig Scott from Elsevier Scirus
explains how web data has been integrated within Scopus.

Daniel Tunkelang from Endeca puts the user experience in the
spotlight, where Fredhopper's Ronny Roeller dives into
search result relevancy beyond linguistics for e-commerce.

Collexis speaks on linguistic analysis appplied in practical cases in the language technology session,
and Jakub Zavrel from Textkernel will talk on information extraction and web mining.

Our practitioner's panel discusses with the audience their challenges
in applying search solutions.

We expect to finalize the programme with more contributions on mobile search,
web search and e-commerce.

The event combines limited attendance from mixed backgrounds
(industry, practitioners and academics) with the time in breaks, lunch
and a closing reception to create the right atmosphere for networking with
fellow delegates and presenters.

Pascal Network to fund SIGIR 2007

The Pascal Network will fund SIGIR 2007.
The PASCAL network is the European Commission's IST-funded Network of Excellence for Multimodal Interfaces. There are 54 other sites in the network. The objective is to build a Europe-wide Distributed Institute which will pioneer principled methods of pattern analysis, statistical modelling and computational learning as core enabling technologies for multimodal interfaces that are capable of natural and seamless interaction with and among individual human users.

At each stage in the process, machine learning has a crucial role to play. It is proving an increasingly important tool in Machine Vision, Speech, Haptics, Brain Computer Interfaces, Information Extraction and Natural Language Processing; it provides a uniform methodology for multimodal integration; it is an invaluable tool in information extraction; while on-line learning provides the techniques needed for adaptively modelling the requirements of individual users. Though machine learning has such potential to improve the quality of multimodal interfaces, significant advances are needed, in both the fundamental techniques and their tailoring to the various aspects of the applications, before this vision can become a reality.

The institute will foster interaction between groups working on fundamental analysis including statisticians and learning theorists; algorithms groups including members of the non-linear programming community; and groups in machine vision, speech, haptics, brain-computer interfaces, natural language processing, information-retrieval, textual information processing and user modelling for computer human interaction, groups that will act as bridges to the application domains and end-users.

Matrixware information services is SIGIR's new silver sponsor.
Founded in Vienna in 2005, Matrixware, currently employs 25 people. A team consisting of computer scientists, mathematicians, linguists and other specialists is developing cutting-edge solutions for the field of intellectual property research. For the first time, new indexing technologies facilitate automatization of large parts of the information retrieval process, from data processing to information extraction in both structured and unstructured documents. A pilot study in cooperation with the European Patent Organisation (EPO) found a significant reduction in labour can be achieved by using automated processes. Furthermore, the adoption of recent insights from the field of computational linguistics enables the introduction of new functions and services. For her pioneer achievements in this area, Matrixware has been granted substantial funding from the Austrian Ministry of Science in 2005.

Keynote speech by ACM Athena Lecturer Karen Spärck Jones

The ACM named Karen Spärck Jones the 2007 ACM Athena
Lecturer. Athena Lectures celebrate women researchers who have
made fundamental contributions to computer science. We are proud to
announce that Karen Spärck Jones will give an invited talk at
 SIGIR 2007 in Amsterdam.

Karen Spärck Jones is emeritus professor in Computers and
Information at the Computer Laboratory, University of Cambridge, UK.
She has worked in automatic language and information processing
research since the late fifties, beginning her career at the then
Cambridge Language Research Unit. She has many publications
including several books: her 1964 thesis, Synonymy and semantic
classification was published by Edinburgh University Press in 1986,
and she is joint author with J.R. Galliers of Evaluating natural
language processing systems, Springer, 1996. She is a Fellow of the
British Academy and of the American Association for Artificial
Intelligence, was President of the Association for Computational
Linguistics in 1994, and has received two awards for information
retrieval research. She has been a member of the DARPA/NIST Text
Retrieval Conferences Programme Committee since 1994, and involved
with other US evaluation programmes, notably the Document
 Understanding Conferences on automatic summarising.
Her work in the last decade has been on document retrieval including
speech applications, database querying, user and agent modelling,
summarising, and information and language system evaluation.
She taught for the MPhil in Computer Speech and Language Processing,
on language systems, and for the Computer Science Tripos on information
 retrieval.

Each year the ACM's Committee on Women
 in Computing honors a
preeminent woman computer scientist as the Athena Lecturer.
Athena is the Greek goddess of wisdom; with her wisdom and sense
of purpose, and her willingness to enter the fray, Athena
epitomizes the strength, determination, and intelligence of the
 "Athena Lecturers."

Keynote speaker: Edwin van Huis

We are pleased to announce that Edwin van Huis will give a keynote speech at SIGIR 2007. Edwin J.F.B. van Huis (1958) is the Director General of the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision (Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid) since 1996. Before that he was Managing Director of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and worked for the Ministry of Culture in the Netherlands.

Edwin van Huis is a Master of Science in Business Administration from the Erasmus University Rotterdam, and a Master of Science in Biology from the University of Florida (USA) and the University of Utrecht. He is also the president of FIAT\IFTA, the world organization of broadcast- and national AV-archives.

The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision was established in 1997 as the result of a merger between three large audiovisual archives and the Broadcast Museum. Substantial collections of radio and television programmes, documentaries, commercials, amateur films, photographs and music are all to be found at this institute. The (total) archival holdings include materials dating from the earliest days of cinema right up to current news broadcasts. The size of the archive is estimated at 700,000 hours worth of viewing and listening. The major collection currently held is that of the (Dutch) public broadcasters, the magnitude of which increases daily.

The institute is a private foundation and has almost 200 employees. Based in Hilversum, the heart of the Dutch media landscape, its primary function is to service the Dutch public and commercial broadcasters. Together with them, we aim to shape the future of producing programmes (on TV, internet and radio) in the digital age. However, the actual user base of this institute's (rich) archival holdings is much broader, including all levels of researchers, documentary programme makers, and the visiting public at the integral (state of the art) museum. These various user groups all have their own specific requirements regarding audiovisual programme content, and in order to meet these the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision provides a wide, efficient and professional, range of services.

On December 1st, 2006, the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision opened a futuristic building which houses the Beeld en Geluid Experience. It is a hands on exhibition for the general public and for schools to experience the position and the power the media hold in our society.

Requests for mentoring closed

The deadline for entering the SIGIR 2007 mentoring programme passed. Our mentoring chair, Mark Sanderson, received around 40 requests: about 25 % more than last year. Experience from past conferences shows that 1 or 2 mentored papers are accepted as full papers each year.
A mentor is someone who helps with preparing the mentee's SIGIR submission through one-on-one advising, usually via e-mail. The mentor can also familiarize the mentee with the standards of SIGIR submissions. Mentors are volunteers familiar with successful submissions and experts in the field of information retrieval. The deadline for submitting a mentoring request was 15 November 2006.
Read more in our Mentoring Call.

Don't dare to submit? Take a mentor!

Want to submit to SIGIR, but don't know how? SIGIR 2007 is making an effort to attract papers from junior researchers and researchers from fields other than IR by establishing a "mentoring" or "pre-review" option.
Authors who want to submit a paper to SIGIR 2007, and have not presented a full-length paper at a past SIGIR meeting, have the option of being matched up with an experienced SIGIR reviewer. The volunteer mentor will offer comments on a draft paper or description of the work in advance of the SIGIR deadline (and of course will not be one of the official reviewers for the final submitted paper, if any).
Read more in our Mentoring Call.
